How to Fix Mscorsvw.exe 100% CPU Usage in Windows 8

mscorsvw.exe 100% CPU

So, you’ve installed .Net Framework on your Windows 8 computer and all of a sudden it started freezing up. When you open the Task Manager, you see that there is a process called mscorsvw.exe and that it’s consuming 100% CPU. In this article, we’ll try to help you solve this problem.

What Is Mscorsvw.exe?

100% CPU usage is one of the most annoying computer errors. When it happens, your PC becomes really slow or even freezes and becomes unusable, so that your only option is to reboot. A lot of different things can be the cause of 100% CPU consumption. Only too often they are viruses and malware. Luckily, mscorsvw.exe is not a virus.

Mscorsvw.exe is a process belonging to the CLR Optimization Service. This service has been developed by Microsoft and it’s absolutely safe.  This service is used by your operating system to  precompile .NET assemblies in the background. Under normal circumstances, the CLR Optimization Service should run in the background for a short while, no more than 10 minutes, and then it will only kick in when your system is idle to process some of the low priority assemblies. And then it should go away. However, that’s not always the case and sometimes the mscorsvw.exe process remains running, consuming 100% CPU. If that’s what’s happening to you, you may want to either stop the process entirely or try to fix it.

How to Stop Mscorsvw.exe

There are several ways of stopping the mscorsvw.exe process. The easiest way is this:

  1. Open the Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc
  2. Go to the Processes tab and select the mscorsvw.exe process
  3. Now right-click on the process and select Stop
  4. The process will be stopped and your CPU usage should be back to normal

However, this method doesn’t guarantee that the mscorsvw.exe file won’t be back and won’t start taking up 100% CPU again. So, if you want to stop the process permanently, do the following:

  1. Open Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) and go to C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\xxxxxxx, with  xxxxxxx being your . Net Framework version number
  2. Now press the Windows key+R to open the Run… box, type cmd in it and press Enter. This will open the Command Prompt
  3. In the Command Prompt, type C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\{YOUR VERSION NUMBER}>ngen.exe executequeueditems and hit Enter
  4. Wait for the CLR Optimization Service to precompile all assemblies.
  5. The process will be gone from the Task Manager and your CPU usage will be back to normal
