How to Fix RuneScape Crashes and Errors

RuneScape is a very popular free MMOG with millions of players worldwide. But, being a browser-based online game, it constantly causes problems – crashes, glitches and other errors. Things might get better with the release of RuneScape 3, a new version of the game that will use HTML5 and is supposed to take gaming to the new level, will not eliminate RuneScape crashes completely. In fact, users whose browsers are struggling with HTML5 will get even more problems. In this post we will provide fixes for common RuneScape crashes.

Why Does RuneScape Crash?

The first thing you need to understand about RuneScape is that it’s a browser-based game, which means that essentially it’s your browser that crashes because for some reason it can’t handle some aspects of the game. The most common reasons for RuneScape crashes are:

  • Java errors
  • Browser errors
  • Registry errors (Windows only)
  • Hardware problems (low RAM, low hard drive space, etc.)
  • CPU overload

Fixing RuneScape crashes is usually as easy as detecting the component that is actually causing the crash.

Fix RuneScape Java Errors

Java is the bane of most online games and RuneScape is not an exception. Only too often Java crashes RunScape and prevents you from playing the game. Usually you will get this error messages:

exception:java.lang. NullPointer Exception

Applet Loading Failed

This usually indicates a problem with AOL caching Jar files. To fix RuneScape Java-related errors, make sure all your JRE files are up to date and check if there are any updates from Java. If you are not using the latest versions, run an update and RuneScape will stop crashing.

Fix RuneScape Browser Errors

If you think that it’s your browser that causes RuneScape crashes, then you need to check that your browser is compatible with RuneScape (Chrome, FireFox, Safari).

If you are on a Mac, the next step is to clear the Jagex cache. To do that, locate  the folder .jagex_cache_32 on your computer and delete it. The use spotlight to find any Jagex-related files and delete them.

Cluttered browser cache can also be causing RuneScape lags and crashes. So, it’s good to clean it up every once in a while either from browser settings or by using the Disk Cleanup utility in Windows. You can open Disk Cleanup by clicking on Start – Programs – Accessories – System Tools – Disk Cleanup.

Another thing you can do is try a different browser. Often the crashes will be gone if you change your browser.

RuneScape Registry Errors

Errors in the Windows registry are another common cause of RuneScape crashes. RuneScape-related registry errors are usually obsolete keys and other leftovers from previous gameplays and previous versions. Cleaning the registry with our recommended tool will fix RuneScape crashes in a matter of minutes.

And last but not least, make sure that your hardware specifications meet RuneScape minimum requirements. The reason for RuneScape crashes can be as simple as not enough RAM or not enough disk space to run the game. If that’s the case, you’ll need to upgrade your hardware to play RuneScape without any crashes, lags or glitches.
