What Causes Windows Error 1603 Errors On Windows?

  • ?Error 1603: A fatal error occurred during installation?

There are plenty of reasons as to why the 1603 error notification will be displayed.  The Windows 1603 error is mainly caused because for some reason, the PC cannot correctly read the Windows Installer program or the components that it requires to run.  It is possible that your system is encountering damaged or corrupted settings during the installation process, which leads to the 1603 error message showing. You need to repair any file errors on your system to fix this problem ? which can be accomplished using the steps below:

Step 1 ? Install the Program Into A Different Folder

It is most possible that the location where you want to install the program will not permit the program to work correctly.  To prevent these types of installation problems on your system, you can install the program into a different folder.  In order to do just that, select a different folder when prompted during the installation process.

Step 2 ? Change The ?SYSTEM? Account Permission To Full

To be able to give ?Full Control? rights to the ?SYSTEM? account, you should perform these steps:

  1. Double-click My Computer on your Desktop.
  2. Right-click the hard drive that contains the folder where you want to install the Windows Installer package, and then click Properties.
  3. Select the Security tab inside the Disk Properties dialog box and do either of the following:
    • Windows 2000 ? Verify if the Name box contains the ?SYSTEM? user account.
    • Windows XP ? Verify if Group of user names account box contains the ?SYSTEM? user account
  4. If the ?SYSTEM? user account is missing in the Name box (for Windows 2000) or in the Group or user names account box (Windows XP), you should perform the following steps to add it:
    • Click the Add button
    • In the Name field, select ?SYSTEM?, click Add, and then click the OK button
  5. In the Permission section, select the checkbox before ?Full control?, click the Advanced button and do the following:
    • Windows 2000 ? In the dialog box that is displayed, select ?Reset permissions on all child objects and enable propagation of inheritable permissions? check box for the SYSTEM account and then click the OK button
    • Windows XP ? In the dialog box that is displayed, select the ?Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects? check box for the SYSTEM account, and then click the OK button
  6. Click Yes, if you receive a security message.
  7. Finally, run the Installer package again.

This procedure is only applicable with Windows 2000 or XP versions.  If the installation still produces the error, you need to proceed to the next step.
